BEYOND GROUP TOURS AND DAY TRIPS
One-to-one residential is best
My one-to-one, residential workshop format is the best way to approach mastering a complex and challenging photographic genre. Here's a few reasons why...

A personalised learning
experience
The one-to-one format offers a highly personalised learning experience that, regardless of skill level, significantly accelerates understanding and growth. For unlike group workshops, which must cater to a wide range of abilities (and attitudes), my course is tailored to the individual. This means the focus is on their specific goals, whether that is mastering manual settings, improving composition, developing a personal style, or preparing for professional work.
Instant feedback
Another benefit is immediate feedback. As a client shoots, I can observe their process and offer guidance on atmospheric considerations, compositional stance, camera settings and creative decisions in real-time. Any issues can be addressed on the spot, turning potential frustration into valuable advancement. Such instancy builds confidence and reduces the trial-and-error that often impedes self-taught progression.

Flexibility is key
A key advantage comes in delivering a bespoke course in line with current skill levels. The flexibility of one-to-one focus means it can be structured to exactly suit a client’s aspirations, comfort levels, and be adapted to the optimum pace and approach to learning. This is particularly relevant in the studio, where time is not wasted covering aspects that are already understood; instead, more attention can be given to potential growth areas. Such focus is particularly valuable when teaching advanced editing, proofing and printing techniques.
No pressure
Importantly, the one-to-one setting encourages open discussion and questions. Clients feel more comfortable asking questions and experimenting creatively without peer pressure. This relaxed environment fosters experimentation, promotes deeper understanding and is ultimately more enjoyable. A very significant factor in the learning sinking in.

A wider creative experience
As for the residential, all inclusive aspect, this affords a concentrated learning period where the focus is solely on the photography. There are no hassles with arranging transport, food and accommodation. Plus, beyond the limitations of a day trip, there's more time to visit a wider range of locations, and to get stuck into post processing in the studio. Hence it delivers a wider, more rewarding creative experience.
A unique perspective
When I began formulating my workshop business plan back in 2010, to stand out in the crowded marketplace, I identified six key aspects that would create a truly unique photography workshop.
1 - I would solely focus on the coast. Because Seascape photography was my passion and you have to love what you teach if you are going to inspire others!
2 - I would not offer a group tour. For while this would provide a much more lucrative revenue stream (hence why there were so many on the market), the individual experience was compromised. As was a shoreline with more than two or three photographers on it! Therefore I would focus on a solo client (or a couple or two friends).
3 - Day trips were out. I could not possibly cram everything I wanted to impart into just a few hours at a couple of locations and I had to give value for money.
4 - I had to maximise on my professional expertise and experience. Therefore it would be a course that combined guided location shoots with truly effective studio tuition. For no one could match my coastal knowledge and professional skill set..
5 - I enjoyed the company of kindred spirits. And in my view, anyone looking at shooting seascapes would be one. So having them stay to enjoy some good food and accommodation would be the ideal way for them to relax and advance their photography.
6 - I would offer year round availability. This way the seasonal choice would be there for clients to take advantage of, and, hopefully, give them another reason to come back!
So a year round, one-to-one, multi-day, residential workshop it was!
