Local beaches & bays

The drone shot and map shows our location in relation to some of the finest coastline in the UK.  As you can see, there’s a wide variety.  From golden beaches to rugged cliffs, a sleepy estuary to hidden coves, you have much to explore on the doorstep.

Crantock Bay

The jutting promontories of Pentire Point East and Pentire Point West embrace Crantock Bay.  Being tucked-away down winding country lanes, the bay had remained an idyllic beach destination for those in the know for years.  With marram covered dunes, spreading golden sands and a lovely surf break, it is a truly majestic place.  In recognition of this, back in 2014 Crantock was voted ‘Britain’s Best Beach’ by the BBC’s Coast programme. The following year The Sunday Times’ Travel supplement did the same and word was well and truly out!

As a result, Crantock can get busy on the sands close to the car park in the in the high season.  Yet if you walk a few hundred yards, you will still be able to find a quiet spot to enjoy the sun.

The beach is patrolled by the RNLI between March and October.

Porth Joke

Tucked away between Crantock Bay and Holywell Bay, you can discover a real Cornish gem.  Porth Joke (or Pollyjoke to the locals) is a stunning small bay that is at the end of a wooded valley and surrounded by rolling headlands.

To get there, you can drive down the bumpy track and park at the Cubert Common NT car park. Or, you can walk around the headland from Crantock and enjoy some spectacular cliff views on the way.

Polly Joke does not have RNLI life guards.

Holywell Bay

If you take the beautiful stretch of coast path from Polly Joke and walk around Kelsey Head, you will come to one of Cornwall's most famous beaches.  Holywell Bay has starred in a host of TV series and Hollywood movies for good reason.  It is spectacular!  The wide stretch of golden sands is surrounded by dunes and rocky headlands and guarded from the west by the familiar sentries of Gull Rocks.  There's a NT car park if you want to drive there, and a good beach pub/cafe for food and refreshments.

Local food & drink

There are a couple of very good pubs and a tea rooms/pizza restaurant down in the village, while alongside daily groceries, Crantock Stores sells some of the best pasties in the county.  Halwyn golf driving range just outside the village has a sunny drinks garden and indoor eatery with a good menu.

The nearby towns of Newquay and Perranporth are buzzing tourist hotspots with lots of beach bars, pubs, cafes, restaurants and gift shops.  Newquay has the Lighthouse Cinema complex if you fancy catching a movie.  Or there are day boat trips from the harbour if you want to catch a fish, or a close-up of a friendly seal!  The iconic Headland Hotel has a spa facility where you can enjoy being pampered before sitting down to lunch or dinner out on the terrace.  Plus rising star chef Adam Handling's Ugly Butterfly restaurant, that's based within hotel, has recently won its first Michelin star.

Farther afield

Beyond what's close by, being centrally positioned, everything else Cornwall has to offer is within an hour or so's drive.  Famous harbours, gardens, estates, theatres and art galleries alongside all the destination towns and heritage sites are there to be explored.  If you fancy doing something a little 'off piste' just let us know and, between Sam and I, we can always point you in the right direction.

Getting here is easy.  By car, the A30 brings you to within a few miles.  Take the A392 turn off at 'Highgate Hill' and follow the signs to Newquay, then pick up the A3075 and take the first right signposted Crantock.  By train, Newquay Station is just a few miles away.  As is Cornwall Airport - Newquay (NQY)  And if you're coming by train or air, just let us know and we can sort pick up's and drop off's.
